Robotics
Robotics Club is a lively after-school environment where students get to learn about teamwork, hand tool skills, electronics, software, programming, and design—all while having fun and forming close friendships with both peers and mentors. The club competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). Meetings are held on Fridays from 3-5 pm from October until the FRC kickoff event, which is held on the first Saturday in January every year. During the kickoff the year’s game is revealed and the official rules and regulations are provided.
At the kickoff, each team is provided a kit of parts with necessary components to a rolling, remote controlled chassis. At this point the students brainstorm the mechanism necessary to complete the task for a given year. Based on their interests and skill set, they are then broken into teams: mechanical, software/programming, electronics, marketing.
The kickoff event marks the beginning of the 6-week build season, in which the team meets formally after school. Different groups may spend longer hours or meet on additional days depending on their progress. It is not unusual to find students in the lab as late as 8 pm or during school vacations!
