Special Programs

Beginning in 9th grade, students are eligible to apply to participate in an exciting engineering opportunity in partnership with NYC FIRST Robotics and the STEAM Center at the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. Students are able to participate in this program for the duration of their studies at Energy Tech - and we even have some alumni who continue to be involved.

In this program, students engage with engineering design principles, participate in the FIRST FTC Robotics competition, and design their own projects. The course takes place in maker spaces at our school and at the STEAM Center, and students learn to use advanced tools and technologies. There are many weekend trips and events, and it is a fantastic stepping stone to FRC Robotics and advanced engineering opportunities at Energy Tech and beyond.
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) Career Academies are a recent addition to Energy Tech as of 2021!

As one of our school’s partners, NYPA hosts this career-readiness series for our Years 4-6 students at our LaGuardia campus. Students attend 3 hour sessions every other month, during the school day or after school, to learn crucial career skills, attend financial literacy workshops, engage in hands-on engineering activities, and network with NYPA engineers and professionals. In addition to gaining new skills and creating connections with NYPA, the Career Academies often serve as a “pipeline” for NYPA’s summer internship as students who fully participate are given preferential selection.
Energy Tech is part of a 5-year grant program in partnership with New Vision and the Gates Foundation. This program is focused on 9th grade student success and a transition to the rigorous Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. There are 18 schools across New York City in this program, and our teacher collaborate within and across schools to improve outcomes for all students.
